The implantation of a DRG stimulator begins with a trial. If the problem is successful, a permanent stimulator will be implanted.

The components of the DRG stimulator include electrical leads, an optional extension, and an implantable pulse generator. The electrical leads are threaded into the epidural space and the intervertebral foramen.

The pulse generator is implanted in a pocket either in the upper buttock or the abdominal wall. The pulse generator generates an electrical current that flows through the lead into the electrodes placed over the DRG. Each electrical information is connected to four electrodes placed over the DRG.

DRG stimulation stimulates the nerves carrying pain signals and blocks pain signals from being sent to the brain.
